ROMA, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $9 million worth of methamphetamine hidden in a shipment of laundry detergent at a South Texas port of entry, officials announced on Friday.

What we know:
The seizure happened on Aug. 11 at the Roma International Bridge, which connects Roma, Texas with a city in Mexico. According to CBP, an officer referred a 2012 tractor-trailer that was hauling laundry detergent for additional inspection.
By the numbers:
Officers used an imaging system to scan the shipment and detected anomalies within the shipment. The physical inspection uncovered 240 packages, weighing a combined 485.78 kilograms, or about 1,071 pounds, said to contain a substance believed to be methamphetamine, according to CBP officials.
CBP estimated the drugs had a street value of more than $9.57 million.

Investigation underway
What’s next:
CBP turned over the suspected narcotics, tractor-trailer and driver to the Roma Police Department.
Police have opened a criminal investigation, according to CBP.
Officials did not identify the driver or announce any charges in Friday’s release.
