Broccoli sprouts tied to salmonella outbreak
What we know:
The FDA says the outbreak stems from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts broccoli sprouts made in Moyie Springs, Idaho. Evergreen Fresh issued a recall of the broccoli sprouts on Sept. 4 after a sample collected by Montana health officials tested positive for salmonella.
Broccoli sprouts are broccoli seeds germinated in water and eaten whole after four to six days of germinating.

What we don’t know:
It’s unclear how the sprouts became contaminated.
By the numbers:
The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 22 cases of salmonella have been reported across four states, including two hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.

The sprouts were sold in grocery stores and restaurants in Idaho, Montana and Washington, though the sprouts could have been sold in more states. Cases have been reported in the following four states, with Washington state having the most people sickened.
What is salmonella?
The backstory:
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause food poisoning and stomach illness.
Most people infected with salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the bacteria. The illness, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the FDA.
Diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps are common symptoms.

- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
- Diarrhea for more than 3 days
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as: Not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, feeling dizzy when standing up
