The father of a U.S. Navy sailor who was deployed in the Middle East for nine months has been released from immigration detention, The Associated Press reported, citing his family.
Luis Manuel Aviles was arrested on Aug. 22 after leaving his home to take his car to the mechanic, his wife shared with the AP.
Argelia Aviles explained that her husband, a handyman in Key West, Florida, has a permit to work in the United States. Luis Manuel Aviles is from Nicaragua and has lived in the U.S. for 19 years.

Joshua Aviles, Aviles’ son, wrote on Facebook on Tuesday that his father was released from federal immigration custody.

Referencing Justice Department records, the AP reported that an immigration judge dismissed Luis Manuel Aviles’ case on Monday, hours after he was booked into an immigration detention center in Miami.
The AP noted that the Department of Homeland Security didn’t offer comment on Monday or Tuesday to explain why Luis Manuel Aviles was arrested and later released.

The Associated Press reported that Joshua Aviles, Luis’s son, wrote in a Facebook post on Aug. 22 that he was still on the USS Lincoln “fighting for a country that has given me everything” when he got a call about his father’s detention on Saturday morning.
“This is heartbreaking for me. I don’t know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly treated like a criminal,” Joshua Aviles wrote.
