German automaker BMW is recalling three of its hybrid models over concerns about an issue with the starter that could cause it to overheat, even when the car is not running. The recall covers more than 29,000 vehicles in all.

Why you should care:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  states that corrosion inside the starter relay could cause a short-circuit and potentially overheat the starter. The report adds the problem could arise when the vehicle is running or parked with the ignition off.

By the numbers:

The majority of the 21,119 recalled vehicles are BMW’s mid-size 530e models, both the iPerformance and xDrive editions. The compact 330e iPerformance and full-size 740Le xDrive vehicles are also included. See the list of years and number of cars affected below:

What’s next:

BMW plans to contact owners via mail and tell them to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer where the starter will be replaced for free. Owners who have previously paid for a starter replacement may be eligible for reimbursement.

What you can do:

Until the starter is replaced, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside and away from buildings.
