A toaster or convection oven uses one-third to one-half as much energy as a full-sized oven.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Not setting your refrigerator or freezer too cold. Recommended temperatures are 35\u00b0-38\u00b0F for the fresh food compartment and 0\u00b0 F for separate freezers for long-term storage.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight. Test them by closing the door over a piece of paper or a dollar bill so it is half in and half out of the refrigerator. If you can pull the paper or bill out easily, the latch may need adjustment, the seal may need replacing, or you may consider buying a new unit.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Regularly defrosting manual defrost freezers and refrigerators; frost buildup decreases the energy efficiency of the unit. If you are washing a small load, use the appropriate water-level setting.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from lighter-weight clothes.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Don&#8217;t over-dry your clothes. If your machine has a moisture sensor, use it.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Clean the lint screen in the dryer after every load to improve air circulation and prevent fire hazards.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Periodically, use the long nozzle tip on your vacuum cleaner to remove the lint that collects below the lint screen in the lint screen slot of your clothes dryer.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the heat remaining in the dryer.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Periodically inspect your dryer vent to ensure it is not blocked. This will save energy and may prevent a fire. Manufacturers recommend using rigid venting material \u2014 not plastic vents that may collapse and cause blockages.<\/span><\/li><li><span>Consider air-drying clothes on clothes lines or drying racks. Air drying is recommended by clothing manufacturers for some fabrics.<\/span><\/li><li><span>If you have a front-loading washer or high-efficiency top-loader, use detergent labeled for high-efficiency (HE) machines. HE detergents are low-sudsing and quick-dispersing to clean well in high-efficiency washers that use less water.<\/span><\/li><\/ul> <!-- --><h2><strong>Keep hot air from leaking into your home<\/strong><\/h2> <!-- --><p>To keep your home cool, make sure you are keeping the heat out.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows.<\/p> <!-- --><h2><strong>Lower your water heating costs<\/strong><\/h2> <!-- --><p>Water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy consumed in your home. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends setting your water heater at no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent scalding.
