{"id":4611,"date":"2026-06-16T04:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T04:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4611"},"modified":"2026-06-16T04:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T04:01:08","slug":"some-eado-businesses-see-world-cup-boost-others-still-waiting-for-fans-to-spend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4611","title":{"rendered":"Some EaDo businesses see World Cup boost, others still waiting for fans to spend"},"content":{"rendered":"<div> <!-- --> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span>FIFA Fan Festival may be bringing thousands of soccer fans to Houston&#8217;s East Downtown neighborhood, but not every business owner says they&#8217;re seeing the same benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4609\">Houston Controller Chris Hollins investigates Mayor John Whitmire\u2019s $127K advisor<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Fan Fest was closed Monday because of weather concerns, soccer fans could still be seen walking around EaDo looking for places to eat, drink and cool off.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>For business owners near the festival footprint, the first few days of the tournament have brought mixed results.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Mixed Results in EaDo:<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Abby Mejia, Director of Operations for Chapman &amp; Kirby, said the restaurant and event space saw a surge of customers during the Mexico match after Fan Fest reached capacity.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We filled up the whole space within about 10 minutes of that announcement,&#8221; Mejia said. &#8220;It was great. The energy in here was great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>The business has also welcomed visitors from outside Houston and outside the United States, including fans from Canada and Europe.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Still, Mejia said some match days have been slower than expected, forcing the business to adjust staffing and promotions as the tournament continues.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Access Concerns Grow:<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Just a few blocks away, Gotti&#8217;s owner, Irv Williams, said his experience has been much different.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4607\">Most patriotic states in America revealed ahead of July 4<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Williams said road closures surrounding Fan Fest have made it harder for customers, delivery drivers, and employees to access the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>He said DoorDash orders, which make up a significant portion of his business, have dropped sharply because drivers have struggled to reach the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>In response, Gotti&#8217;s has launched promotions aimed at attracting customers, including offering to reimburse parking or rideshare costs for some groups.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d rather have some business than no business,&#8221; Williams said.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Williams said he supports bringing the World Cup to Houston but hopes city leaders and organizers can address access concerns for businesses operating near the festival footprint.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Looking Ahead:<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges, both business owners said it is still too early to judge the overall impact of the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>With several weeks of matches remaining, they say they&#8217;re hopeful more visitors will make their way beyond Fan Fest and into the surrounding neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>For now, business owners say the World Cup&#8217;s economic impact appears to depend on where you are in EaDo.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4604\">Nightly glass of wine may not be as harmless as many people think, study suggests<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!-- --> <!-- --> <!-- --> <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Houston FIFA Fan Festival is drawing crowds to EaDo, but local businesses report mixed results.
