{"id":4005,"date":"2026-06-09T19:01:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T19:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4005"},"modified":"2026-06-09T19:01:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T19:01:19","slug":"karmelo-anthony-trial-jury-reaches-verdict-to-be-read-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4005","title":{"rendered":"Karmelo Anthony trial: Jury reaches verdict; to be read soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div> <!-- --> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>MCKINNEY, Texas<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span>The jury has reached a verdict in the case Karmelo Anthony who is accused of stabbing Austin Metcalf to death during a track meet last year.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4004\">Trump lawyers miss $10B lawsuit deadline, judge demands explanation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 12-person Collin County jury began deliberating late Tuesday morning after defense attorneys and prosecutors delivered closing arguments.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Anthony faces a murder charge in the April 2, 2025, death of 17-year-old Metcalf at a stadium in the Dallas suburb of Frisco.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>The defense rested its case Monday without calling Anthony to the witness stand.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>During closing arguments Tuesday, Collin County District Attorney Bill Wirskye argued that Anthony provoked the confrontation, brought a hidden knife to the track meet, and launched an unjustified &#8220;sneak attack&#8221; on an unarmed victim.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/houstonmovingjournal.com\/?p=4001\">Texas county lifts data center moratorium amid pressure from developer lawsuit<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t get to meet a shove with a stab, especially if you provoke the shove,&#8221;\u00a0Wirskye told jurors.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Defense attorney Mike Howard countered that Anthony, who was 17 at the time, acted out of a &#8220;split second of fear and chaos&#8221; after being confronted and pushed by the much larger Metcalf inside a crowded team tent where Anthony was sitting. Howard maintained that the stabbing was an act of self-defense.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- --><\/p>\n<p>Jurors can consider charges of murder or manslaughter.
