A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii\u2019s Big Island just before 10 p.m. local time Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.<\/p>

Dig deeper:<\/p>

The quake occurred as the USGS continues monitoring Kilauea, one of the island\u2019s active volcanoes. Scientists expect the volcano to erupt again within the next several days following multiple eruptions earlier this month.<\/p>

According to the USGS, the earthquake hit roughly seven miles south of H\u014dnaunau-N\u0101p\u014d\u02bbopo\u02bbo, a community along Hawaii\u2019s southwest coast.<\/p>

What they’re saying:<\/p>

“The depth, location, and recorded seismic waves of the earthquake suggest that it was caused by stress due to bending of the oceanic plate from the weight of the Hawaiian island chain,” USGS wrote in a statement.<\/p>

Local perspective:<\/p>

Residents across the western side of the Big Island reported strong to very strong shaking, and several aftershocks followed the initial quake. More than 2,500 people submitted reports to the USGS saying they felt the tremor.<\/p>

What’s next:<\/p>

Although the USGS said the earthquake was not connected to Kilauea\u2019s recent activity, officials are still closely watching the volcano and expect another eruption between May 24 and May 27.<\/p>
