With the peace talks between the United States and Iran not appearing to make much progress publically, Pakistan offered assurances that it was working through diplomatic channels to ease tensions in the region.\u00a0<\/p>

“The clock on diplomacy has not stopped. The peace process is working,” Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told reporters in Islamabad.<\/p>

Pakistan, which has been mediating discussions between the two nations, did not indicate if the U.S. has responded to the latest Iranian proposal, which President Donald Trump has publicly dismissed as “garbage.”\u00a0<\/p>

Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country would welcome diplomatic support from other countries, including China, which had just welcomed Trump and a U.S. delegation for a two-day summit.<\/p>

Araghchi noted Beijing helped facilitate the restoration of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Trump also told FOX News\u2019 Sean Hannity that China\u2019s President Xi Jinping offered to help during their conversations. However, China has shown little public interest in wanting to get involved.<\/p>

Trump has suggested hostilities could resume, and Iranian state television has repeatedly aired segments with anchors holding Kalashnikov-style rifles in an effort to prepare the public for war. Fighting has also heated up between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon despite a nominal ceasefire there, further straining the wider truce.<\/p>

UAE nuclear plant targeted in drone strike<\/h2>

A drone strike targeted the United Arab Emirates\u2019 sole nuclear power plant on Sunday, sparking a fire on its perimeter. There were no reports of injuries or radiological release, but it highlighted the risk of renewed war<\/u> as the Iran ceasefire remains tenuous.<\/p>

No one immediately claimed responsibility, and the UAE did not blame anyone. It has however accused Iran of launching multiple drone and missile strikes in recent days as tensions have risen over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy waterway that Iran still has in a chokehold.<\/p>

The United States is blockading Iranian ports and diplomatic efforts aimed at a more durable peace have repeatedly faltered. The UAE has meanwhile hosted air defenses and personnel from Israel, which joined the U.S. in the Feb. 28 attack that sparked the war.<\/p>
