The list of frozen pizza and snack food brands subject to a public health alert\u00a0grew longer\u00a0<\/u>this week as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) added some regional items to varieties that were sold nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>

The agency notes more products will likely be added going forward, as well, as health officials trace the downstream effects of a dairy recall.<\/p>

The USDA\u00a0originally issued<\/u> the public health alert at the end of April and warned that some meat and poultry products containing FDA-regulated ingredients may be contaminated with Salmonella.\u00a0<\/p>

Anyone who purchased one of the products listed is advised not to eat them and throw them away or return them to where they were purchased. Retailers who bought them are urged not to sell or serve them.<\/p>

Why you should care:<\/p>

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella could lead to salmonellosis, which is one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses, the USDA explained. The symptoms, which include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, can start as soon as six hours after consumption but could wait as long as six days to appear.\u00a0<\/p>

Typically, the symptoms will last four to seven days and people will recover without treatment, but in some cases they may need to seek medical attention. Older adults, infants, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop more severe illnesses.<\/p>

The backstory:<\/p>

The USDA\u2019s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the alert about meat and poultry products containing the potentially contaminated dairy ingredients after the Food and Drug Administration reported that multiple establishments received ingredients that were made with dry milk powder that had already been recalled.<\/p>

No illnesses confirmed to be related to the alert have been reported, the USDA stated.<\/p>
