Well over a half-million Subaru vehicles were recalled over concerns that an incorrectly listed weight rating could lead to a crash. The recall affects four of the Japanese automaker’s most popular models. 

Why you should care:

The recall stems from the fact the 541,237 vehicles affected by it list an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) on their certification label. The GAWR lists how much of a load can be handled by a single axle system. 

By the numbers:

Of the models included in the recall, the vast majority are Ascent SUVs, Subaru’s three-row model, and the affected ones stretch back nearly a decade. Here is a full list of recalled items:

  1. Subaru Ascent – 2019-2026 – 384,407
  2. Subaru Forester Hybrid – 2025-2026 – 77,504
  3. Subaru Forester – 2025-2026 – 49,946
  4. Subaru Crosstrek – 2026 – 29,380

What you can do:

Subaru plans to mail new certification labels to owners. Owners can have a dealer install them for free, if they choose. The company expects to send letters late next month alerting owners to the misstated GAWR and the risks associated with it.

Owners can contact the company by calling 1-844-373-6614. They can also check to see if their vehicle is affected on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
