AIKEN, S.C. – Authorities say they have recovered partial remains of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris and now believe it is unlikely they will ever recover her entire body after investigators say her parents used corrosive chemicals and other tools in an effort to destroy evidence following her death.

According to WIS, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced that DNA testing confirmed human remains recovered from the Cedar Creek Reservoir in Fairfield County were consistent with being the biological offspring of Javeayah’s parents, Michilae Herring and Johmarea Harris.

According to Sawyer, investigators determined the parents allegedly used “corrosive chemicals and other tools” to destroy evidence after Javeayah was killed before pouring what remained of her body into the reservoir.
“I want to also share with you that through forensic evidence, statements, and analysis, extensive and deliberate efforts were made to destroy and conceal evidence following Javeayah’s death,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer said investigators believe Javeayah had been dead for about one month before Herring called 911 on June 30 to report her missing. He also said authorities do not expect to recover any additional remains.
“It’s unlikely that the entirety of Javeayah’s body or any other remains from this point forward will be recovered,” Sawyer told the outlet “We had all hoped and prayed to find her body, but with the information we’ve uncovered, that’s simply not possible.”
The sheriff described the case as unlike anything he had encountered in nearly four decades in law enforcement.

“I’ve never heard of anything so horrific,” Sawyer said.
The backstory:
Javeayah was initially reported missing on June 30 after authorities said she was last seen near the intersection of Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road in Aiken County.
The report triggered a massive multi-agency search involving the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and numerous local agencies.

Days later, investigators announced they no longer believed Javeayah was alive. Sheriff Sawyer said evidence indicated she had died at least a month before the 911 call reporting her missing.

What’s next:
Javeayah’s father, 23-year-old Johmarea Harris, has been charged with homicide by child abuse.
Her mother, 22-year-old Michilae Herring, has been charged with homicide by child abuse and filing a false police report.
Sawyer said Thursday that both parents will also face additional charges for destruction and desecration of human remains.
The investigation remains ongoing. Sheriff Sawyer thanked the community for supporting search efforts and asked people to continue praying for Javeayah’s surviving family members.
