The resignation follows months of mounting pressure within the party to hand over leadership after declining public support, disappointing election results and criticism over the government’s handling of key issues.

In a speech outside of Downing Street, Starmer defended his government’s record, pointing to economic growth, higher wages and increased defense spending. “The chance to change the lives of millions of people for the better. That’s what I came into politics for,” Starmer said. “An economy that is stronger, growing faster than our peers. Wages rising faster than inflation in every single month since we came to power.”

Labour’s leadership process is scheduled to begin July 9. Nominations are expected to close before Parliament breaks for the summer on July 16. However, the timeline could be accelerated if newly elected Andy Burnham runs unopposed.
