MUSCATINE, IowaPolice are investigating the deadly shootings of six people who they suspect were murdered by a relative who took his own life when confronted by authorities on Monday.

The shooting occurred in Muscatine, Iowa, which is roughly 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids.

What we know:

Officers were called to a residence where they discovered four people were fatally shot, the Associated Press reported, citing comments from Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies at a news conference. 

Kies told reporters that police later found 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, the suspect, on a trail in the city. The police chief also confirmed that McFarland had a criminal record but didn’t elaborate, the AP noted.

 Two other men who also are believed to be family members of McFarland were later found fatally shot in another part of the city, Kies shared with reporters. He added that one man was found in his home and the other was discovered dead inside a business.

What we don’t know:

Police have yet to release the names of the victims and any details about them.

The AP reported that police are continuing to probe the shootings, and they’re asking anyone with information to call its major crimes unit.
