PORTLAND, Ore. – A 15-year-old student was hospitalized Tuesday after authorities said he mixed and ingested several chemicals he brought to Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Oregon.

Portland Fire & Rescue and Portland Police Bureau officers responded to the school around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a student experiencing a medical emergency. First responders found the student in the cafeteria, where school staff were assisting him.
The student was taken to a local hospital for further treatment. Officials have not identified the chemicals involved, and the substances remain under investigation.

The school was evacuated as fire personnel worked to safely neutralize the mixture. More than 100 students, staff members and faculty were evaluated after being moved to nearby athletic fields, where students were reunited with their families.
No additional patients required ambulance transportation. Two staff members went to a hospital in private vehicles as a precaution, officials said.
The Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit examined the materials and helped ensure the cafeteria was safe. Police homicide detectives also responded as a precaution while investigators determine where the chemicals came from and what led to the student ingesting them.

Police acknowledged that the incident could be “frightening and unsettling” for students, families and staff as the investigation continues.
